The cattle of San Miguel Cattle Company wear a brand steeped in history and tradition.
First registered in Williamson County, Texas nearly 150 years ago,
the Love family is proud to use the brand and continue the tradition of placing it on an improved crop of calves every year.
The Love family began putting together the current herd of registered Brahman cattle on the Persimmon Gap Ranch in Brewster County in 1979.
West Texas is difficult cattle country and cattle have to be survivors.
Females must have strong maternal instincts with the ability to raise a calf on short rations and long walks to water.
In 2002
San Miguel Cattle Company transitioned to Willow Wallow Farm in south Texas,
40 miles southeast of San Antonio where the grass is a little greener and living a little easier.
While this has meant a decrease in overall cattle numbers, it has allowed for increased involvement with juniors
and the addition of some very fine
herd sires.
For over thirty years, our red and gray herds have been subject to the same selection criteria.
We stress reproductive efficiency, good udders, gentle temperament, as well as balanced, moderate conformation.
These cattle are a culmination of the work of some of the most talented breeders in the business over the course of the last 100 years.
The contribution of these breeders is gratefully acknowledged.
On a personal level, three Love daughters and four grandsons are actively involved with the San Miguel Cattle Company.
RED HERD
The pedigrees of the red herd contain many well known names like
HK Mr. America 61/9 as well as
home raised bulls that never visited a show ring, but made their influence felt in the herd.
LB Sir Fairway Manso 156/4 left his mark on a set of beautiful red cows that are now making their own contribution to the herd,
stamping their offspring with his distinctive look.
GREY HERD
The grey herd is composed of elegant, functional cattle that represent the breed standard.
Continuous selection for market traits allows them to fit in to any purebred or crossbreeding scenario.
Bulls like
JDH Mr. Charley Manso and
Mr. Legend Manso 222/3 figure
heavily in their pedigrees.
